LDES Council and Kyoto Club to Partner to Advance LDES Deployments

Brussels, 7 March – The LDES Council and Kyoto Club are delighted to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to encourage collaboration between their respective organisations to inform, evaluate and promote adoption of long duration energy storage (LDES) solutions for customers and accelerate systemic grid decarbonisation. The organisations will work together to address barriers and identify opportunities to accelerate the adoption of LDES, including initiatives such as educational material, stakeholder workshops, webinars and other events.

“The LDES Council is delighted to deepen our collaboration with Kyoto Club,” Alex Campbell, Director of Policy and Partnerships at the LDES Council, said. “LDES is an essential component for the clean energy transition in Italy and around the world. We look forward to working closely with Kyoto Club to accelerate the deployment of LDES.”

"We are pleased to sign this partnership with the Long Duration Energy Storage Council, a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future. Today, long-duration energy storage is a key enabler in accelerating the penetration of renewables beyond 50%, ensuring greater stability and security for the power system. Most storage technologies are already at a commercial or pre-commercial stage, ready to support the energy transition and contribute to the decarbonization of the sector. Collaborations like this are essential to spreading knowledge and promoting innovative and scalable solutions that can meet market needs and global energy policies" said Letizia Magaldi, President of Kyoto Club.

The MoU outlines planned collaboration opportunities including a public policy toolkit to help guide enabling actions by policymakers and partnering to identify policy and market barriers to deploying LDES.

The LDES Council recently published Deploying LDES: Implementation Best Practices, detailing a concise policy framework for policymakers, regulators, technology providers, and end users to drive the accelerated rollout of LDES. The roadmap framework includes seven enabling actions to spur action and speed the deployment and scaling of LDES solutions globally.
