LDES Council Welcomes Will Broad as Global Director of Policy and Markets

Brussels, 15 July – The Long Duration Energy Storage Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Will Broad as its new Global Director of Policy and Markets. In this role, Broad will lead efforts to accelerate the adoption of long duration energy storage (LDES) solutions by developing the Secretariat's strategy and policies, identifying priority markets, and driving stakeholder engagement.

"I am thrilled to join the LDES Council and contribute to its mission of advancing reliable, resilient, and flexible energy solutions," said Broad. "LDES is key to ensuring both industry and grids can access energy around the clock. I look forward to engaging with global stakeholders to further the LDES Council’s mission of supporting 1 TW of LDES deployment by 2030."

Broad brings substantial experience in both the private and public sectors working to deploy energy and energy storage solutions. Previously, Broad worked for the UK Government in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as Head of Smart Systems and Flexibility, delivering a suite of policies to encourage the deployment of energy storage including initiating a cap and floor mechanism for LDES. He also led a team to consult on ambitious reforms to power markets. He subsequently served as the global policy lead for power systems at bp, developing policy frameworks for the power sector to deliver bp’s strategy, sustainability aims and returns for bp’s low carbon businesses. Earlier in his career, Broad ran domestic energy efficiency programmes for the UK energy regulator, Ofgem, and served on expert panels to review the energy policies of New Zealand and Finland for the International Energy Agency.

"Will’s expertise and leadership will be invaluable as we expand our efforts to advance LDES deployments across the globe," Julia Souder, CEO of the LDES Council, said. “This appointment underscores the LDES Council’s commitment to advancing LDES technologies to build a sustainable and resilient energy future.”

The LDES Council continues to work closely with governments, industry leaders, and civil society to drive policy innovation, investment, and public awareness on the benefits of LDES solutions.
